Honduras Ovidio Gomez Parainema Natural
Proud Mary’s connection to the Santa Bárbara region of Honduras began all the way back in 2012, when we were introduced to a small group of producers situated around the town of Peña Blanca, close to the shores of the stunning Lake Yojoa. More than a decade later, that group of producers has grown in number, and our relationships have deepened.
Ovidio Gomez was among the members of that initial group. Ovidio is a man of few words, but hidden beneath his gruff exterior (often with a machete in hand) is a passionate soul who cares deeply for the land and his community. Ovidio’s coffees have developed quite the following among our staff and regular customers, with each new harvest eagerly anticipated.
This particular lot is from a plot of Ovidio’s farm that was passed down to his daughter, Ingris. After working side by side with her father for several years, Ingris moved to the United States, and her plot of the farm is once again under the care of Ovidio’s tender hand. Despite not being involved in the day-to-day running of the farm, Ovidio continues to separate the coffees grown on Ingris’s plot.
Panama Finca Hartmann Caturra Natural
The Hartmann family are among Panama’s pioneers of specialty coffee. Their story began four generations ago with Alois Hartmann, who settled in Panama in 1912. His son, Ratibor, established Finca Hartmann on 100 hectares of virgin rainforest inherited from his father. Today, the land is shared by Ratibor’s five children and grandchildren.
The rainforest has been preserved, with coffee grown under the shade of the canopy, and the family continues to plant native trees to ensure the health of the ecosystem. The land is also renowned for birdwatching, with around 300 species recorded. It’s no surprise, then, that their coffee carries the Bird Friendly certification.
We’ve long loved the profile of the Hartmanns’ Natural Caturra, having purchased it for many years – but this year’s harvest offers something truly special. It leaps off the cupping table, packed full of loud, expressive fruit notes.
