About: The Rugazi washing station is one of 13 mills that form the Akawa project, created to help producers escape the cycle of poverty in a sustainable way. The project emphasises good agricultural practices, environmental responsibility, and social equity. Rugazi means “place of many palms” and that is the first thing you notice when entering the Bubanza province in West Burundi where the station is located. The soil around Rugazi is a deep red, rich in nutrients that help produce sweet and complex coffees. This particular lot has been processed via the honey method, something mill manager Adolphe Ndarusanze has only been doing since 2018, but it has been a great success. This coffee is UTZ certified.
