About: The Hartmann family are one of Panama's pioneers of specialty coffee. Their story starts two generations ago with Alois Hartmann, who settled in Panama in 1912. His son, Ratibor, established Finca Hartmann with 100 hectares of virgin rainforest he inherited from his father. Today, the land is shared by Ratibor’s five children, who have gradually added more land to the family estate. Finca Guarumo is one such addition, owned by Allan and Ratibor Hartmann, with their wives, Tessie and Elke. In 2016, when the Hartmann’s purchased the small 4-hectare farm, it was used as pasture for grazing cattle, they’ve since allowed the native vegetation to take back the land. The farm is planted exclusively with Geisha, protected by the dense shade canopy of the rainforest.
Due to the high elevation, low nighttime temperatures, and heavy mountain rains, the coffee trees at Finca Guarumo must work hard, they’re small and compact, and the coffee is exquisite. In 2022, Allan and Ratibor placed 1st in the Best of Panama competition’s Geisha Natural category, with coffee from Guarumo, and received a staggering $2,000/lb. at auction.
